Will: I do agree. The fans and even within the team I do feel like and there's some sense of elevation when it comes to playing these meaningful games.
Analyst Notes: Shohei used the word 士気 or morale or motivation to describe the players. I liked the way he used the word 材料 which I would interpret as ingredient. Will did not. |
Fabian Reporter: You were talking about October, I was curious to see the you were talking about balancing out between trying to do too much versus letting it sort of come to you. How are you sort of controlling your emotions in these sorts of at bats, kind of at bats tonight with runners in scoring position?
Will: こういう大事な場面、大事な打席、特に得点圏で欲が出過ぎるといい結果につながらないというのもありますしもちろん結果を出したいという気持ちもあると思うんですけどもそのバランスというかどう保ててるんですか？
[Translation]: These important places, important at bat, especially in scoring position, get greedy it won’t connect to good results, also wanting good results, how do you balance and maintain that?
Shohei: 基本的には場面関係なく自分のいい打席をおくれればいい結果が出ると思っているので。本当にそこに集中したいなと思います。
[Translation]: Basically, doesn’t matter the situation, I want to have a good at bat and that will lead to good results. I just want to focus on that.
Will: Really focus on quality at bats and just be able to do that every single at bat.
Analyst Notes: Will’s translation of the question was really poor. I think there were important elements of not forcing the game and letting the game to come to him which I would translate as 流れを押しつぶせる事なく or 流れを寄り添う. You need to be a good athlete to understand I guess. |
Reporter: Have you ever felt this good at the plate before?
Will: こんなにあのその打席の感覚と言うのは過去には凄くいい感覚だと思いますけれども過去にはこんなにいい感覚のはありましたかね？
[Translation]: This at bat feeling in the past good feel you had I think, in the past this good feeling you have had?
Shohei: 感覚はあると思いますが、もちろん年を重ねるごとに打撃の美術が上がっているのでフィジカルもそうですけどそう言うのその自力みたいのものが少しずつ形になっているのかなと思います。
[Translation]: The feel, yes, I have had before. Definitely, as the years stack on my art of hitting improves, also the physical is important, but the things I can control are little by little taking shape.
Will: I have felt good like this before. I do think its the foundation has been built on just becoming a better player over the years with more experience and just being able to play better.
Analyst Notes: This was a really beautiful answer that was very poorly translated into English. Will should probably commit to memory the concept of打席内 or in the box, also Shohei talked about the art of hitting which was also not expressed by the translator. As always, extremely poor translation. |
Bill Reporter: Do you expect a hit every time you go up to bat?
Will: 全打席もヒット打てるような感覚ですかね?
[Translation]: Do you feel like you will get a hit every at bat?
Shohei: どうなんですかね、もう打席に入ったらあんまり何も考えてないて言うかま、本当にその打席に集中しているのであまり打てそうだな、打てさせそうだなという意識はのもあまりないのかな。
[Translation]: I’m not sure, when I get in the box, I don’t really think of anything. Really, I am just focused on the at bat and feeling like I am going to get a hit awareness I don’t have.
Will: For me, I don't really think about whether I could get a hit or not. Just focusing on that at bat is the sole purpose.
Reporter: You tied Ichiro for most steals in the season tonight? What does he mean to you what does that record mean to you?
Will: イチロ選手の盗塁記録に並びましたが、お谷さんにとってはどのような意味なんですかね？
[Translation]: Ichiro’s stolen base record you tied, Mr. Ohtani for you what does this mean?

Analyst Notes: This was also a beautiful answer that was inadequately translated. I loved how Shohei said he will run wherever the team needs me to run like that literally which was flavorlessly expressed by Will. |
Reporter: You are one step closer to the division title, what would it mean to you to accomplish this?
