Shohei Ohtani talks Dodgers struggles, runners in scoring position April 20, 2024

Kirsten: Shohei first, just when you think about this homestand and what has happened in regard to the win-loss for this team? What do you see as being the issue?

Will: 今回のホームシリーズ振り返ってみてなかなか勝てない状態ですけどもが続いてどう思いますか？

[Translation]: This homeseries, looking back, not really winning situation what do you think about it?

Shohei: 投打がちょっと噛み合ってないかなというのはありますけどそれでも全試合近い点差で粘っていると思いますしそこはみんな必死になってやっているので切り替えていくしかないかなと思います。

[Translation]: Pitching and hitting is not really coming together, but the games are close and everyone is working hard so we just have to turn the page I think.

Will: Yeah, I think the pitching and hitting, we haven't quite been able to, you know, mix and match well, but I think we're, you know, all the games are pretty close and we're really working hard to make sure that we come out of the top. So I think we just have to keep plugging away and move on.

Kirsten: For you personally, just with runners on in scoring position, finding more success as of late. What's been the point of focus for you?

Will: 最近, あの、個人的なアレですけれども得点機の時にしっかり打てていると何か個人的に変えたこととかありますか？

[Translation]: Recently, um, personally that, scoring chances times you seem to be firmly hitting, is there something you changed personally?

Shohei: 特に変えないようにするのが変えたことかなと思うので全打席、どんなシチュエーションでもしっかりと自分のバッティングというかそういうのをしっかり

どんな状況でも変えずにいければなと思います。

[Translation]: I don’t especially change anything. I approach each at bat the same with the same approach so I don’t change based on the situation.

Will: Nothing specifically, it's just more of regardless of the situation, just sticking to my approach no matter what. That's more of the change that I did, which is no change.

Reporter: David said that he was going to sort of talk sort of how aggressive you can go towards the…did he have that conversation? What? Does your approach change at all?

Will: 監督からそういう得点圏機の積極性ということに関して何か話す話すということをおっしゃっています監督から何かおっしゃってましたか?

[Translation]: From the manager, scoring opportunities aggressiveness about you said did you talk to the manager about that?

Shohei: 単純にゾーンが少広がっているというところかなと思うのでアグレッシブなの悪いとかではなくてそのアグレッシブなゾーンがまず広がっているというところでスコアリングポジションじゃない場面っていうのはしっかり比較的できているのでそこを継続していこうということです。

[Translation]: Simply, the zone gets a little bigger if you get aggressive with runners on, it is not necessarily bad, but when you don’t have runners on you handle the zone well so just maintaining that for when runners are on base.

Will: The zone that I'm swinging is a little bit larger with runners in scoring position so you know with nobody on base, I'm pretty good at it so it's just really just winding down the zone and yes, we talked about it with Doc.

Reporter: When the pitching is struggling like it has been this week, does that put more pressure on you guys as an offense especially in some of those situational at-bats with guys on base just trying to, you know  with guys on base just trying to manufacture some runs?

Will: ピッチャーが苦労している中、打線がいいのにプレッシャーを感じているとか、得点権得になった時に少しプレッシャーを感じているとかそういう感じとられていますか?

[Translation]: With the pitchers working so hard, hitting is good do you feel pressure, do you feel pressure with runners on base?

Shohei: もちろんビハインドのチャンスっていうのはプレッシャーかかると思いますけど逆に言えばそれこれだけ多くのチャンスをまず作れているというところは自信を持っていいんじゃないかなと思うのでそこから先っていうのはまた数をこなすことで改善されてくることもあるのでそこは個人個人のやり方次第かなと思います。

[Translation]: Definitely, coming from behind puts more pressure on you, but on the other hand the fact we are creating so many chances should give us confidence and just improving the more opportunities we get that depends on each individual's abilities and approach.

Will: I'm sure we all feel the pressure to be able to score you know, put up good at-bats, especially when we're behind and in runners in scoring position, but it's really looking at it each of us individually I think it's sometimes the matter of just having more at bats in situations like that so, um…yeah.

Deputy Dorado: Two more, guys.

Reporter: But is the frustration level at all? For you guys being here losing seven of your last nine games, is it really frustrating for you to build it at all?

Will: あの7試合負けて多少チーム内でフラストレーションというのは感じ取られてますか？

[Translation]: Losing 7 games, do you feel any frustration within the team?

Shohei: 負けが込むと多少ないとやっぱあると思いますけどみんな必死でこう切り替えて次の試合に臨もうとしていると思うので確かに連敗を挟むとそういう風に暗くなることあると思いますまあ全員で全員でミーティングをしたりとかそういうことはやっているのでそこで早く切り替えて明日に臨むというのが大事かなと思います。

[Translation]: When the losses stack up definitely, but just turning the page and focusing on the next game is important. Definitely when losses stack up it gets kind of dark, but we are having meetings on how to turn the page and improve the situation and just need to look forward to tomorrow that is important.

Will: Yeah, when we lose like this just with this many games. It's not the best atmosphere, but we're doing our very best to make sure that we move on and do our best. Our next game and we've we did have team meetings to be able to address this.

Reporter: With 13 runners left on base, the base is loaded four different times, how much of it is frustration and how much of it is we're close to breaking this down?

Will: 満塁でのチャンスとか、ランナーがいる場面でなかなかチャンスを得点を取れないという中でそれはフラス解決するというどちらですかね？

[Translation]: Bases loaded chances, runners on bases situations, is this fix or not?

Shohei: どちらもあるまあフラステーションももちろんたまるとは思いますけど早く切り替えないといけないですし、終わったことをいつまでも反省はしますけど。引きずってもしょうがないことではあるので反省はしています切り替えて明日に望みたいなと思っています。

[Translation]: There is both, when there is frustration you need to turn the page quickly. You have to regret the mistakes but you can’t dwell on them and just turn the page and look forward to tomorrow.

Will: I'm sure there's always a little bit of frustration, but it's also our ability to be able to move on and learn from it and be able to take advantage of it in future opportunities.
