TLDR Summary:

  • He stays focused on process over results, saying the team’s trust, quality at-bats, and execution led to a big win and a memorable moment.

Reporter: You hit a couple points before that you hit one foul. Did you get a sense of something was kind of building?

Kyle: Maybe, I mean I made some good contact right there, the one just went foul, the other one just out to right. I was just trying to hit the ball hard and try and get a hit right there at the end, so it worked out.

Reporter: What kind of feel do you think building with those two walks?

Kyle: I mean, yeah, you know, the guys in front of me did a phenomenal job drawing those walks. Shohei with the huge double there to pull us within one. Guys had phenomenal at bats right there at the end. So just having that opportunity is huge. Anytime we have a chance to win, we try to take advantage of it. So it was a huge inning for us.

Reporter: What's your approach? What are you looking for? You know that guy at all?

Kyle: Um…I can't remember if I've faced them before. I know he's a good pitcher. He has had a good start to the year so far, but I was just trying to get something in the zone or at least close that I could hit and get a hit on. First pitch, changeup that I fouled off. I thought I saw it decently well, just didn't put the best swing on it. And then kind of the same thing next pitch, I was able to kind of stay through it more, get a knock up the middle with it.

Reporter: I know you wouldn't say that you're not trying to do too much, but could a hit like this help to exhale?

Kyle: Hopefully. We'll see how the next whole games go but you know right there we’ll take it. Happy with the win and everything

Reporter: Now since you moved lower in the order, I mean, the at bats have you improved you quality in them?

Kyle: I've had some good contact. Not with not like a whole lot of like in the last series. They just made a couple of nice plays. Seiya, kind of the one kind of in the corner at the wall, Nico and Dansby up the middle, just hit the ball decently well and stuff just didn't get a knock on it, but

that happens sometimes. I mean, there's some good defenders in this league. Had a couple barrels tonight. I was just able to get that last one right there.

Reporter: Does it make it easier to trust the process even if it's not showing up in the box score knowing that you are getting the quality of the at bats?

Kyle: It's tough sometimes. Just because you don't see the results right away and everything but

and you just kind of got to stick to it and just try and make as much quality contact as you can. Just wait for them to drop.

Reporter: Kyle, you round first there. You know, runs score, you seem kind of nonchalant, but inside are you like kind of excited at that moment?

Kyle: Yeah, I mean I hit it and started going to first and I was like…It wasn't quite loud yet until we like actually ended up winning the game right there and Sho scored. So I was like, did I get the score wrong or what, but afterwards, I saw everyone running out and it got loud and everything. I was like, okay. Sweet, this is sick. So, it was cool.

Reporter: …telling Freddie when he came over?

Kyle: Yeah, I mean I see him running over me and give me a hug so that was huge moment right there.

Reporter: I know you said you felt comfortable since coming over here, but does a moment like that just kind of help you feel like a bigger part of the scene or just having that kind of first kind of big moment here. Like what does that do just for your comfort level in this room?

Kyle: Yeah, I mean, that's nice right there. Anytime I can contribute to the win, I'm happy for it. So, I mean, the guys in this clubhouse, the coaching staff and everyone's been great since I've been here. It's been nice being over here.

Reporter: Did you keep the ball?

Kyle: I don't know where it is, so not yet. I don't know if someone has it right now or not.

I don't know, I see Juan with something, so maybe that's it. Or the, like…

Reporter: It's for Jake.

Kyle: Yeah, for Jake. It was his first win. So that was huge for him. We're happy for him. We did a little thing for him after the game. Cool, yeah.
